Drone Liability Insurance: A Practical Guide for Commercial Pilots

Most clients require proof of insurance before you fly. We break down the major providers, coverage types, and what to look for when choosing a policy.

Most clients — especially commercial ones — will ask for proof of insurance before you fly. Without it, you're not just exposed to financial risk; you're locked out of the best-paying jobs. Here's what you need to know.

What Coverage Do You Need?

At minimum, you need general liability coverage for your drone operations. Most commercial clients require $1 million per occurrence, $2 million aggregate. Some larger clients (construction companies, government contracts) require $2M/$4M.

Hull Coverage vs. Liability

Liability coverage protects you if your drone damages property or injures someone. Hull coverage protects the drone itself. For commercial work, liability is non-negotiable. Hull coverage is optional but worth considering if you're flying expensive equipment.

Major Providers

The main providers for commercial drone insurance in the US include Verifly (pay-per-flight), SkyWatch.AI (monthly/annual), Thimble (hourly/daily), and Global Aerospace (annual). For most working pilots, an annual policy from SkyWatch or Global Aerospace offers the best value.

What to Look For

  • Coverage for your specific drone models (some policies have equipment limits)
  • Coverage for payload (cameras, sensors) — often excluded from base policies
  • Additional insured endorsements (clients often require this)
  • Coverage for BVLOS operations if you plan to pursue waivers

Certificates of Insurance

When a client asks for proof of insurance, they want a Certificate of Insurance (COI) naming them as an additional insured. Most insurers can generate these within 24 hours. Keep your insurer's contact info handy so you can turn these around quickly.
