Building a Repeatable Construction Progress Workflow That Clients Love
Construction documentation is one of the most reliable recurring revenue streams for drone pilots. Here's how to systematize your workflow and keep clients coming back.
Construction documentation is one of the most reliable recurring revenue streams in commercial drone work. A single project can mean monthly flights for 12–24 months. Here's how to build a workflow that keeps clients coming back.
The Discovery Call
Before you quote, understand the project. How many acres? How many phases? What deliverables does the GC or owner actually need — progress photos, orthomosaic maps, 3D models, or all three? The answers determine your pricing and equipment requirements.
Standardize Your Flight Plan
Use the same flight plan every visit. Same altitude, same overlap, same GCPs (ground control points) if you're doing photogrammetry. Consistency is what makes progress documentation valuable — clients need to compare month-over-month, not figure out why the images look different.
Deliverable Templates
Create a standard deliverable package: a PDF report with annotated progress photos, a link to a cloud-hosted orthomosaic, and a comparison slider showing current vs. previous visit. Tools like DroneDeploy and Pix4D make this straightforward.
Pricing for Recurring Work
Offer a monthly retainer rather than per-visit pricing. A retainer of $400–$800/month for a mid-size project (with 2 visits/month) is reasonable and predictable for both parties. Include a clause for additional visits at a reduced rate.
The Handoff
At project completion, deliver a final time-lapse video compiled from all your visits. This is a high-value deliverable that costs you almost nothing to produce and gives the client a compelling asset for their portfolio.
